These videos are always fun but than I get let down. This must be the 3 or 4th video I've seen that talks about A24 as an outlier in the same way. Rarely do I see a video that talks about how A24 pulls this off. A24 isn't doing anything new, but it's doing something refreshing by today's standards. They are a contemporary label with a strand of films that all share common value sets. It took over a dozen films for anyone to really take note of A24 as a movie brand, say Mark, you're way better at these kinds of videos than I am. Suppose go you a few more degrees deeper and talk us through the antonym of labels like A24 and why do they matter?

Last film two films I watched on the big screen was Talk to me and Godzilla minus one, the second one was not a24 but they did have a similiar sized budget and I will tell you it felt and looked better than most films with a 10x budget these days.

A24 does a lot of buying films that are already done. They are more like a DJ with great taste. Obviously, they have their own too and more so recently, but it's strange this goes unmentioned in videos like this.

What if you can’t afford one of these cameras? What if your budget is around $2k-$2,500 including one lens? I’m currently saving for the Sony A74 maybe with a 35mm lens. Any advice?

I hope A24 stays a privately owned company. Going public rarely results in a good product and instead is about shareholders and constantly gaining profit and taking low risks. Movie budgets are insane. The million of dollars isn't a lot at all. Having seen sets and the amount of people involved for just one scene for example, it's easy to see why. There are so many people involved, think of just all the background extras that are hired, to get a movie up and going, that immersion and quality comes at a cost. Equipment, crew, cast, location rental, etc.

Would you recommend using extra diffusion still even if you are already using a full Aputure softbox that has two layers of diffusion built in?

Also talking about backlight like it’s a style is a bit misleading. The backlight in the 90s was always extremely harsh usually from an open face tungsten source or something. It’s still an important tool and can be dialled in to make it less obvious and super subtle while still stopping the hair from falling to black and adding some very subtle separation. Especially in a setup like this where you have light from the windows behind a very subtle hair light would help to continue the backlight you’re getting on the sofas etc and make it feel more natural

It feels sourcey because it’s too front on compared to the perception of where the windows would be. I’d move the key off to the right a bit and bring in some bounce to softly fill in some of the shadows. It would feel more natural but you’d still be able to create a brighter portion of the face which would make her stand out

For the same reason that more people are wondering why a daily parody show has great journalistic value and the ‘News’ has become a reality parody show.

MusicBed is awesome, and surprisingly affordable compared to a lot of the more corporate, generic style music libraries. I also get the feeling they treat their artists better, since it’s “ rights-managed” instead of royalty-free, meaning the artists own the copyright.

Setup #3 is almost certainly not shot on film. There's no halation around any of the light sources, the grain looks fake/digital, etc... It just doesn't look like film at all to me. And it just doesn't make any sense to shoot an interview on film, where you'd need to stop and change the film every 10 minutes. It would become very tedious and expensive.

Quick tip on the handheld 416, get a short XLR (like 20cm) and move the transmitter away from the mic itself. Your suspension will thank you and the mic will also not wobble so much (and having your subject on-axis, off-axis, on-axis, off-axis, etc). 😱

A24 is literally what I've always wanted out of a studio the last 20 years. I said, if someone just went out there and took risks on good ideas, they'd start to kill it. I never realized why studios didn't go after lower budget films that are higher margin. Especially if you built up a good reputation, you'd easily make the money back and more. A box office bomb wouldn't hurt as badly either since you're not putting all your eggs in one basket.

A24 is an example of why an unlimited budget is somethings a bad thing. Directors focus more on building the story and making up for the lack of effects.

The secret is simple. Actors want to act, especially in more grounded pieces. Newer directors, although lacking experience have passion+innovation to get shots needed at that particular budget. They combined both needs to create projects more people want to see with actors who want to stay grounded with the indie vibe. (PS: I'm gonna be next!)

I'm a blackmagic fan but the c400 is a killer. By the time you rig up the pyxis it might be around the price of the c400.

I would be interested to see a more apples to apples comparison of A24 movies versus major studio movies that are made solely for awards season. Comparing A24 movies to Marvel movies is meaningless imo. Two different aims completely.

Their films are some of the worst I’ve ever seen. Everything everywhere all at once, and civil war were pretentious film school student nonsense. Nothing made sense in those movies and was remarkably unsatisfying. F tier movies.

This is exactly how the A24 haters think the A24 fanboys look and talk. Anyway, I think this video summarizes ideas that could be interesting but never really explores them in depth. You stay on the surface, which is just too bad :/ keep up!

That’s £1400 for a sound guy. Holy smokes. In the UK, that’s about double a pro sound recordist. How do you engage with A24? Make short films? Write a feature script? Board it? Shoot a scene? Write a novel version of script? Make a podcast? There’s a lot of angles of attack. It’s quite overwhelming for even established corporate filmmakers like me, to engage and make that transition to narrative films. WIP - not easy with family and existing work commitments. Thanks for the vid Mark. You are a true inspiration for filmmakers 🙌

It's very short sighted to compare A24 films to Marvel films. That's low hanging fruit. A24 films stand out for staying with looking for good stories and pursuing the art of good story telling without giving in to pursuing the agendas that have come to be the norm. It's not the budget or the special affects that has made Star Wars the movie poster for why so many movies are so crappy. It's the people and ideology that they continue to force into them.

A24 is the only studio innovating right now. Simply put they care about the films over the profits, in turn making more money cause the films are better. I think other studios will notice over time, hopefully. I bawled my eyes out at the end of The Iron Claw. It is such an amazing film.

3 Spider-Man is due to the Sony rights. If they stop making movies about spider man according to their clause they lose their rights to the IP

Been nothing but impressed with A24 over the years. Would love to work with them on a set one day. But the Iron Claw was great. For someone who grew up watching the Von Erichs in Dallas was part of my childhood. This movie brought it home for me about film making.
